ABSTRACT

I wrote Sally’s Rape in 1989 out of certain personal, socio-economic, and historical issues that push at me. It is now commonly accepted that slavery in the United States was a great shame for all concerned. The deeply rooted presence of black women at the core of this shameful history resonates both consciously and unconsciously in the way some of us perceive ourselves and the way others perceive us still. A performance theatre piece consisting of dialogue with a white woman and people in the audience, the script was inspired by my effort to find a passageway in the performance through my often blind rage over these issues.
