ABSTRACT

The neo-modern and new political economy points of view are evidenced in the proliferation of a variety of labels involving national systems of industry (McMillan 1985), organising (Clark 1987; Kogut 1993), innovation (Lundvall 1992; Nelson 1993) and business (Whitley 1994). These national systems contain many common and some unique elements. This chapter explores the possibility for synthesis as national innovation-design systems (NIDS). Three lines of analyses are considered:

networks of design knowledge (Clark 1987, 1998);

sectoral clusters and the role of location (Porter 1990, 1998; Dunning 1997);

business systems (Whitley 1993).
