ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the structure of late medieval society (roughly 1200-1500) and considers how far we can view it as a class society. To that end, it looks at the relationship between landlords and peasants and the ‘rise of the bourgeoisie’ as measured by the growth of the exchange relation of capitalism compared to the decay of the personal obligations characteristic of feudalism.
