ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by questioning to what extent criticism can be seen as part of the ‘class struggle’ before moving on to consider how applicable the term ‘class’ is to Renaissance England. The remainder of the chapter is concerned with the growing importance of the exchange, particularly in relation to the ‘bourgeois self’.
