ABSTRACT
This chapter considers to what extent ‘class’ was a factor in the English Civil War. It then examines how economic changes impacted on representations of self and society, and how these related to the bourgeoisie, before concluding with a discussion of how John Milton’s Paradise Lost negotiates problems of money and exchange, and the bearing that has on the ‘class’ character of the poem.
