ABSTRACT

The object of this chapter is to offer suggestions that we believe may assist people who wish to set up programmes of museum interpretation by volunteers. In what follows, we confine ourselves to suggestions for the management of museum interpretation programmes with volunteers. However, people thinking of setting up volunteer programmes might well wish to read some of the excellent literature on volunteer work in general and the management of volunteers in museums. In previous chapters we have cited some of this literature; but readers may find it useful to look at the following publications on general issues regarding the deployment of volunteers: Adirondack (1992); Conway (1994); Elsdon (1995); Fisher (1986); Graff (1993); Hedley (1991); Hedley and Davis-Smith (1992); Jackson and McNamara (1987); Knapp (1990); Knight (1993); McCurley and Lynch (1994); NCVO (1993); Neate (1995); Rawlings-Jackson and Shaw (1995); Smith (1994); Thomas and Finch (1990); Tremper and Kostin (1993); Volunteer Centre (1990, 1992, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c); Whitcher (1992); Whitcher and McDonough (1992); Wilson (1976); Wilson (1990).
