ABSTRACT

The object of this chapter is to describe in a qualitative manner five North American volunteer programmes that have made effective use of volunteers, and which exemplify the art of adapting the standard recommended management practices and procedures to attain and meet particular organisational missions and core objectives. It does not seek to be either comprehensive or definitive. Chapter Five describes projects in the Science Museum (London) that seek to draw upon the principles of good practice evolved both in the tutoring schemes described in Chapter Three and in the projects described in this chapter. Chapter Six analyses factors that seem particularly important in sustaining schemes.
