ABSTRACT

For museum interpretation to flourish and expand, we believe that it will become increasingly necessary for museum professionals to delegate some of their work to non-professionals. Specifically, much of the day-to-day business of explaining could be delegated to volunteers. The Nuffield Science Interpretation Project (described in Chapter Five) drew inspiration from the confirmed success over many years of student tutoring as a form of volunteering. As the present chapter will argue, students who act as tutors to other young people have much to gain from the activity-and the instruction that they can offer can be of high quality. Although most of this book concentrates on issues of management, it is useful to review the benefits that can flow from tutoring-itself a form of interpreting.
