ABSTRACT

The term “haka” is a generic concept for Maori dances and the ceremony performed by the rugby players is but one of several. Like all Polynesian peoples, the Maori, who began to occupy the Pacific islands about 1,000 years ago, composed, memorized and performed laments, prayers and war chants. There is a complex mythology to explain the meanings of the “haka and the condition of the Maori”.
