ABSTRACT

The recycling of urban land is a major phenomenon in Western cities. Some of the areas being recycled for more intensive development in Great Britain contain some of that country's best housing, often large, architect-designed houses in extensive plots. This reflects a large demand for more, and different, dwellings in many parts of Great Britain. It has been particularly evident in South-East England (Damesick 1986; Simmons 1986; Hamnett 1986). It has apparently been fuelled by a reduction in the average size of households, increases in disposable incomes, and the redistribution of population.
