ABSTRACT

The Namib desert is the most arid region of sub-Saharan Africa, extending along the Atlantic littoral from south of the Orange river for more than 2000 km to the north, across the Cunene river and into Angola. In Namibia the inland limits of the desert are between 100 km and 200 km from the coast, coinciding with the 200 mm isohyet and the foothills of a broken longitudinal escarpment. Several episodic river systems drain from the savanna highlands, cutting across the desert to enter the sea at widely separated intervals.
