ABSTRACT

Mozambique has not been as well developed archaeologically as some other African countries, but this deficiency is now being offset by a consolidated effort by the country's major academic and governmental institutions. This task began prior to independence in 1975 (SARQ 1980) and was intensified with the establishment in 1980 of the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology at Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo; at the same time, the National Museums and Antiquities service has extended its involvement in teaching, recording and cultural development work on a national scale.
