ABSTRACT

The early Iron Age in Kenya is part of a large tradition, extending into southern Africa, which sometimes (at least in east Africa) combined both iron and stone technology in the exploitation of domesticated and wild animals and plants (Bower, Nelson, Waibel & Wandibba 1977; Bower & Nelson 1978; Ambrose 1984a; Phillipson 1985a). There is still considerable controversy, however, as to the precise definition of this supposed complex.
