ABSTRACT

The rich historiographical output of the fourth century continued unabated in the Hellenistic age. Apart from the Histories of Polybius, the original works have been lost, but the content and character of many can be reconstructed on the basis of the major compilation by Diodorus during the time of Augustus, the biographies of Plutarch (around 100 Ad), and later historical sources who used Hellenistic authors. To these may be added occasional word-for-word citations, which appear mostly in the form of samples of style or references in later texts.
