ABSTRACT

The theoretical background to the observed development discussed previously can be found in an adjusted form of the theory of Europeanization. Traditionally Europeanization is limited to account for the formal spread of European influence based on legal and practical pressures. The theory, as presented in Chapter 3 in this volume, argues that between policy areas Europeanization slowly extends as pressures come to bear on the as yet untouched areas because there is a friction between the already applied rules in one area against the non-applied areas.
