ABSTRACT

In what respects are historical accounts different from myth, ideology, propaganda? What are – or should be – the relations between historical interpretations and contemporary politics? Is my account ‘true’, while yours is ‘biased’, theirs is ‘ideology’? What are the relations between the types of society in which historical accounts are produced, and the nature of those accounts? Is ‘objectivity’ or ‘value-neutrality’ in principle desirable or even possible?
