In fact the Prime Minister’s powers are few and, although potent, hedged about by political restraints. They are: to select and dismiss ministers andmore important-to assign portfolios to them; to create Cabinet committees and choose their chairmen and members; to influence the outcome of important meetings through taking the chair; and some control over information, press relations and patronage.
