ABSTRACT
In Britain the idea of a Prime Minister’s department has been considered by every Prime Minister since 1964 (for example, Bruce-Gardyne 1974, Donoughue 1987, Hennessy 1989). Most recently it was floated in a book by two Labour party advisers close to Blair in the run-up to the 1997 election (Mandelson and Liddle 1996).
