ABSTRACT

In Euripides’ tragedy The Bacchae, the god Dionysus comes to Thebes disguised as a stranger. He is outraged by king Pentheus’ refusal to honor his divinity, and his outrage is worsened when the king denounces and imprisons him. Dionysus escapes, but devises a revengeful plan. The king is to behold the mysteries of the women worshiping Dionysus. But in their frenzied and ecstatic fury, the women dismember the king.
