ABSTRACT

The third of our four sources of mastery-following upon both cumulative development and also the capacity to manage change-is the ability to provide continuity, inclusive of community and organization. So while we may be captivated by the east-west polarity as representing the dynamic field of change, we cannot afford to ignore the stabilizing field of continuity. For straddling this northsouth divide is bureaucracy and community. Both horizontal and vertical fields, moreover, as can be seen in Figure 3.1, are characterized by both positive attributes (shown in bold type) and negative attributes (shown in italics).
