ABSTRACT
Once you begin to look beyond academic careers, the scope is almost endless. The PROSPECT (HE) computer aided guidance system holds details of approximately 400 occupations suitable for graduates, but that is the tip of a very large iceberg. New occupations are constantly being created. For example, web master and call centre manager are occupations which did not exist five years ago. Many people have occupations which defy classification under traditional job titles, while others have developed ‘portfolio careers’, doing two or three or even more jobs alongside one another, for example, tourist guide and local history lecturer.
