ABSTRACT

The book aims to help readers who are trying to decide between a career in academic research and teaching or an alternative occupation which will use their research-related skills. People at various stages may find it useful: undergraduates contemplating a career in research; postgraduate students preparing to seek employment after graduation; contract research staff and teaching assistants who are finding difficulty in securing permanent posts in higher education; and established academics who, for whatever reasons, are seeking a change of career direction.
