ABSTRACT
At a conference in the fifties Professor J.N.Findlay made a plea that the topic of infinity be rescued from “the grip of the experts.” Since it seems fair to assume that this was not simply another area in which the cult of the amateur was making itself felt, we can take it that the experts in question were mathematicians and that the plea that was being addressed to the philosophical world at large was that someone should extract the general philosophical issues concerning infinity from the welter of technical discussions about the law of the excluded middle and the law of double negation, the axiom of choice, arbitrary sets, free choice sequences, impredicative definitions, inaccessible cardinals, hyperarithmetic sets or quantifier-free notation.
