ABSTRACT

THE first group of people to be discussed lived in a London district Marie Paneth called ‘Branch Street’. In the discussion which follows, her book of that name is one of the two main sources of information, the other being Spinley’s very important account of the ‘deprived’ in her book The Deprived and the Privileged, which is about the same London district. Although changes have come about since these writers were there, there are similar areas in many large towns. Therefore, though the evidence for this chapter is drawn from one place at one particular time, the pattern there made manifest may be observable elsewhere at the present time.1
