ABSTRACT
This paper is devoted to a critical and comparative analysis of the studies and research carried out in Italy on the relationships between the extension of schooling, the economic system and employment. We shall consider the main lines of study followed in the past forty years by researchers who, approaching this field from various angles, have respected heuristic principles by basing their approach on specific theories or have highlighted and analysed empirical phenomena which had largely been ignored until then.
