ABSTRACT

After the more detailed investigations of challenges to Sustainability arising in the context of climate change, energy, and agricultural food production, this final chapter moves back to the more general level of analysis of the first two chapters. Its aim is to reflect again from such a more comprehensive view the role that the idea of Sustainability could ideally play in the contemporary world. For this purpose, this chapter will first draw on the previous three chapters in order to identify broader features and patterns characterising Sustainability and its historical development. Then, it will discuss the nature of Sustainability as an idea and how it can contribute to a more sustainable order.
