ABSTRACT
INstrongestcontrasttothec~seofChina,Indianreligiosity,whichwe areabouttoconsider,isthecradleofthosereligiousethicswhichhave abnegatedtheworld,theoretically,practically,andtothegreatestextent. ItisalsoinIndiathatthe'technique'whichcorrespondstosuchabnegationhasbeenmosthighlydeveloped.Monkhood,aswellasthetypical asceticandcontemplativemanipulations,werenotonlyfirstbutalso mostconsistentlydevelopedinIndia.AnditwasperhapsfromIndia thatthisrationalizationsetoutonitshistoricalwaythroughoutthe worldatlarge.
