ABSTRACT
Together with Senegalese LÉOPOLD SENGHOR, Césaire developed one of the most controversial ideologies of the Black world, that of Négritude. While their interpretations bifurcated over time, the ideology remains in use, and remains as controversial as it was in the 1930s. Césaire’s plays took his ideas and analyses of the colonial situation and the struggles for independence to audiences in the Caribbean, in Africa, in North America and in Europe.
