ABSTRACT

Large-scale resource projects in remote areas bring together small, politically vulnerable groups and modern industrial practices, as well as confronting highly evolved tropical environments with the massive application of technologically advanced extractive processes. It is a very one-sided encounter, further weighted in favour of the corporate side by the enthusiastic support of a national government eager to promote ‘development’ and the growth of export earnings from non-oil sources.
