ABSTRACT

This is probably the most difficult question because it all depends on the values of the person asking the question. Play is not one single action or activity or a way of doing something that is easily defined. It is a combination of all these and it has direct relationships with learning as well as with people’s potential and motivation for learning. It is useful to formulate one’s own working construct of play and, after several attempts, the best I can offer at the present time is:

Play appears to be the engagement of people in a variety of activities over which they have ownership and which motivates them to persist towards new learning.
