ABSTRACT

Special education is a term that refers to instruction for students with physical or specific learning disabilities. 1 Researchers worldwide indicate that there is neither agreement about a clear and comprehensive definition of learning disabilities (LD) nor their diagnostic criteria (Sparks 2006; Tannock 2012). Specific learning disabilities (SLD) impact cognitive processes involved in reception, integration, storage and output, producing difficulties in reading (dyslexia) writing (dysgraphia), and mathematics (dyscalculia). SLDs also impact motor capabilities (dyspraxia), executive function, perception of time, and social skills. SLDs cannot be cured and are often considered ‘invisible’ until ‘discovered’ in school.
