ABSTRACT
Every science can sin by claiming to explain too much of reality. The early nineteenth-century advocates of sociology Auguste Comte and Herbert Spencer claimed it was the science which made sense of all the other sciences. This made it popular with the general public and rightly unpopular with the rest of the academic world in equal measure.
