ABSTRACT
The word infant means ‘wordless’, without speech. Yet every infant is born with a voice and the urge, powerful as hunger, to communicate. Long before language can convey their meaning, babies are programmed to communicate emotion and need, insistently, even stridently, in a way no listener can ignore.
