ABSTRACT

Meanwhile, there had also been a series of political threats. These came from both ends of the political spectrum, the far left and the radical right. In January 1919 the Spartacists, recently reformed as the KPD, tried to seize power in Berlin. At the same time there was a Communist coup in Bavaria which resulted momentarily in a Soviet Republic. In 1920 and 1921 there were further disturbances in the Ruhr, Saxony and Thuringia.
