ABSTRACT

In this chapter we explore the way in which communication is often taken for granted or left to chance and highlight the importance to schools and nurseries of effective ways of communicating. The case study examines both the factors that contribute to successful communication and create barriers to communication, and offers strategies for developing more successful communication between people. In the case study the reader is introduced to Elizabeth, a manager, who has an unpleasant message to communicate to staff. The illustrative material underlines the importance for managers of being clear about the messages they wish to convey and indicates some of the dangers and misperceptions that arise from getting the message wrong.
