ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine the ways in which an establishment can set out to review its changing needs and select appropriate staff when opportunities occur for expansion, or replacement of staff. We introduce an expanding school, where Kate, a new head teacher, is able to involve staff in a process of participative decision-making. The process involves seeking out the views of staff, and the outcomes of this consultative approach often lead to greater staff commitment and involvement in the organisation. We also consider the ways in which the selection of staff relies on the instruments used in outlining specifications for the job and person required and the ways these can be developed, together with issues involved in assessment and decision making.
