ABSTRACT

In the course of the study of the origins and development of the Spiritualist movement certain trends in the origin and organization of spiritualist groups become apparent. We have examined in terms of sociological theory the origins of Spiritualism but have so far not considered sociologically the development of organization within the Spiritualist movement. In the following chapters we shall apply sociological theories which we have developed largely from the theories of Max Weber to the analysis of the movement in an attempt to explain the way in which Spiritualism has developed in Britain.
