ABSTRACT

The rise of university technology transfer is a manifestation of the restructuring of the late nineteenth century dual mission Humboldtian academic model to a triadic format, encompassing economic and social development as well as research and education, with entrepreneurial endeavors based upon scientific knowledge discovered and humanistic knowledge conserved (Etzkowitz 2014). What is new is the universalization of a utilitarian academic mission; heretofore the province of a special class of tertiary education institutions, typically of lesser status than “Ivory Tower” schools in parallel with spreading a basic research mission, a task that is itself increasingly evaluated by social and economic impact measures.
