ABSTRACT
ManyanalysesoflandreforminruralRussiahavefocusedonreform legislationorreformeffortsatthefederallevel.Muchlessattentionhas beengiventoruralresponsestolandreformattheoblastorvillagelevel.2 Thepurposeofthischapteristoaddressthegeneralpaucityofon-site, village-levelanalysisbyexaminingchangesinlanduseinthreevillagesof threeoblasts.Weareinterestedintheinteractionbetweenfederal,oblast, andvillagelevels,aswellaschanginglandusepatternsinruralRussia, especiallyasnewrelationshipsalterlandusebycreatingnewtypesof accesstocreditandinformalrentalarrangementswhichhavealtered agriculturalproduction,processing,andmarketingarrangements.Acentral focusofouranalysiswillbeonpeasanthouseholds(krest'ianskiekhoziaistva),whoseoutputhasincreaseddramaticallysince1990.Ratherthan beingmerelyarelicfromtheSovietpast,wewillarguethatpeasant householdsasproductionunitswillcontinuetoplayavitalroleinthe transformationofRussianagricultureasthenationattemptstomovetoa moreefficientproduction,processing,anddistributionsystem.
