ABSTRACT

To many the question ‘What is the meaning of life?’ seems to be a nebulous one, unanswerable and therefore not worth asking. There is also a less common but related reaction, that the question is nebulous and unanswerable, and therefore worth pondering. Between these two reactions, the cynical and the obscurantist, lies, I think, the truth. The question is of enormous practical and personal importance, and so it is worth trying to get clear about it. It ought to be possible to do so, because there could be after all no reason why this question should be necessarily less clear than any other.
