ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses theories and perspectives that attempt to provide insight into the dearth of progress among the demographic. It provides some theoretical information to help contextualize the underachievement of Black males, provides further context about Black men in post-secondary education. The chapter discusses enrollment of Black men by institutional control and educational outcomes of Black men in diverse institutional types. Although research has shown that Black students are making progress in terms of accessing and succeeding in higher education, the number of Black men entering post-secondary education has been stagnant. Despite the myriad of benefits associated with receiving an education, especially a college education, Black males have made minimal advancement in post-secondary education. According to Lundy, Blacks who subscribe to the mindset of 'acting White' view academically inclined Blacks as abandoning their Black cultural identity and rejecting their cultural norms.
