ABSTRACT

I will describe the function of ‘crime and punishment’ in the mode of domination by distinguishing three levels of analysis: an interpersonal, an organizational and a societal level, characterized by the height of abstraction of the units of analysispeople interacting, organized apparatuses (of regulation), (self-)identified cultures and subcultures, here and now often identical with states and state-analogues. All of this is given a frame by the mode of production, its basic institutions and its historical specifications.
