ABSTRACT

One year later, the Berlin Wall was torn down by enthusiastic Germans while the velvet and violent revolutions of 1989 overthrew the communist dictatorships of Eastern Europe. Three years later, the Soviet Union itself collapsed as an imperial structure. Defined as an antagonistic relationship of competition between two superpowers, the Cold War was at an end as one of the competing superpowers collapsed under the weight of its own contradictions.
