ABSTRACT
Last summer my husband and I spent the summer working with students from the Upward Bound project and most of the girls we worked with were of Mexican descent. It occurred to me then that the question of “machismo” was brought up frequently at our rap sessions. The idea that this value was questioned at all, seems interesting since for years, this has been taken for granted as a “cultural trait” and understood as part of the Latin world. Is it really another hang-up for the Chicana to contend with? In the light of the present equality movements going on does the new Chicana have a legitimate gripe?
