ABSTRACT

Although the Chicana is thought to be outside of the labor market, 57% of Chicanas 14 years and older were income recipients in 1971. According to the national census in March 1972, 544,000 Chicanas (34%) were in the labor force. This approaches the national work force rate for women in general (40%). The 1970 statistics on employment indicate that the work participation rates of Chicanas in California (40%) and in Los Angeles (30%) were proportionately equal to the total work force of all women in California and Los Angeles.
