ABSTRACT

This notice was signed ‘Ludwig’, though it was soon common knowledge that Griswold had written it. Griswold's dislike of Poe is obvious, his reasons less so; but he must have been riled by Poe's lack of respect for his compilations, and he may also have been jealous of his romantic relationship with Mrs Osgood, whose favors he, too, later enjoyed. Griswold was not, however, responsible for the biographical errors: he merely took his facts from the fanciful and inaccurate notes Poe had sent to him in 1841— see Works, I,343–6.
