ABSTRACT

Report (a) was probably written by the chairman of the awarding committee, John Pendleton Kennedy (1795–1870), a distinguished lawyer, politician, and man of letters. He was a good friend to Poe, and introduced him to the Southern Literary Messenger. Other signatories were John H.B. Latrobe, lawyer, inventor, and patron of the arts; and John H. Miller, a Baltimore physician. Poe published an edited version of the report in the Messenger,August 1835, 1, 716.
