ABSTRACT

English (1819—1902) was trained as a physician, though most of his energy went into politics and magazine work. He edited the Aristidean throughout its brief existence. English knew Poe in Philadelphia, and for a time in New York they were close literary associatesthe Aristidean and the Broadway Journal shared the same address. In 1846, however, the two men quarrelled bitterly: Poe lampooned English in the ‘Literati’ papers, and English's vindictive and libellous response (the case is discussed and documented in Sidney P. Moss, Poe's Major Crisis) contributed much to the souring of Poe's public image.
