ABSTRACT

Poe seems to have been responsible for much of this review, though of course he never acknowledged it, and it was initialled by English in the Aristidean index. It is written for the most part in Poe's style, and he makes use of his own critical theory (for example, his emphasis on unity of plot and novelty of effect) to point out his originality and ingenuity. The review also reveals an intimate knowledge of, and peculiar interest in, the origins, composition, publication, and reception of individual tales; and it is unlikely that English would have followed the minutiae of Poe's career with such attention. The September issue of the Aristidean carried a brief notice of Tales (probably also by Poe), complaining of the inadequacy of the selection.
