ABSTRACT

Tupper (18 i o — 89), was a poet and journalist; his versified Proverbial Philosophy (1838) had great success. This review was probably arranged by Duyckinck; on 3o January Poe inquired of him: ‘Have you seen Tupper's notice of my Tales yet? if so — how long is it? long or short — sweet or sour? — if you have it, please lend it to me’ (Letters,2, 313). Poe was pleased by Tupper's efforts on his behalf— in August he told Philip P. Cooke that ‘Martin F. Tupper, author of “Proverbial Philosophy” has been paying me some high compliments — and indeed I have been treated more than well’ (Letters,2, 329).
